    There is a section here at the village for scroll saw reviews. My last upgrade was to an EX-21 and love it. Out of the price range your looking for. Craigslist may have some nice deals, but you have to be very careful and know what to look for when buying used. My understanding is the Dewalt and the Delta are basically the same machines. I also understand that Delta Machinery went out of business. I personally have not confirmed this though. I have some friends that will swear by the Dewalt they own.

    Welcome to village and the addiction. Some really good advice has been given. Get used to the saw and blades with simple outside shapes. Try them in various thicknesses to see how it all reacts. There a lot of places to get free patterns, here at the village is one of them, Steve Good is another. You can also just google line art images of what ever you want, letters, dogs, cats etc. Be patient, go slow and ask questions. As for something to start out understanding some things about the blades. Olson has a great chart for free, you can find it here and maybe print it out. Personally I use Flying Dutchman but everyone has their own opinions. Have fun and enjoy it.

    I started mine about a year ago. First it was just the colors of the stains used for the projects. Then I could try different colors and see what worked best. Eventually I got into a full log. SIze, time, species etc. It helps when talking to a customer on a custom order where I have a general idea of time species and stuff. Makes giving them a closer "ball park " price to see if they are serious and interested. Also aids in keeping working inventory in my shop. Good question, thanks for asking. Looking forward to other replies as well.

    I have used blue painters tape fr quite a while. Works great for me.

    I just received a similar request from a customer who her and her husband owns a local Mr. WaterHeater. She signed off on a disclaimer about copyrights. And I will say she was happy to do so. We never know what to expect when you advertise "custom orders welcomed" but need to be prepared to cover our butts. Wish I understood the laws better but going to proceed as planned.

    I put my patterns on the good face of the wood. Painters tape peels off pretty easy, just be careful around the "fragile" areas of your work.

    I use 3M 77 on the back of the pattern then apply it over blue painters tape.

    Cedar has a great smell when cutting I'll have to agree on that. For me though, I would have to Black Cherry is on the top of the list. That would be followed by some Sugar Maple with the smell of maple syrup in the air. Although it does make you hungry :).

    Shellac may help you out. Dries fast ( made with denatured alcohol ) and comes in different sheen's. Can be buffed to obtain a glossy level. You will smell it but once dried the odor goes away. You can also after it's dry, spray it with Lemon Pledge and buff out giving it more protection. Just a thought .

    Roly has some pretty good advice, might be hard with the shapes of compound cuts though, although a fine artist brush may work. Poly is a finish you build up and it takes a few coats of gloss to get a good glossy finish. You may want to look into spray poly also and apply light coats and rub with steel wool between when dry. Once again hard to do on compound cuts. Another choice would be spray lacquer as it bonds to itself when re-applied. Best of luck. BTW nice cutting on that piece.

    Kind of reminds me of Osage Orange. On a quick search it was compared to Ipe for decking on high end work. With the way the grains, it could possible make a beautiful box or similar item. Keep us posted as to what you decide.
