I always apply clear packing tape on top of the pattern. The trick is to burnish the tape down with a block of wood so the tape is perfectly adhered to the pattern. If you do this, dust can’t get under the tape.

Les, most cedar is not kiln dried. It also contains a lot of oil. So you get a moist, oily powder rather than dry dust. It’s probably not dry enough for your dust collection to pick up. Like trackman above, I have my blower pointed at my dust collection port. I don’t have a remedy for you, just wanted you to know what your problem was.

How about some details like wood used, thickness of wood used, blade type and size.

An oil based finish will darken the Ebony. What I would do is dip the pieces in a 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Wipe off the excess oil, then let it dry. Then apply a topcoat of your choice. Keep in mind anything that claims U.V. protection requires re application every year. It’s best just to keep it out of direct sunlight.

The thickness of the vein is up to you. If it seems to thin, go over it with a thicker blade or, even a spiral blade. I would recommend you try it on some scrap wood before attempting on your work piece. You can always make it thicker, but you can never make it thinner. If you are careful, it’s easier to back the blade out while the saw is running. If the blade doesn’t want to back out, it’s ok to stop the saw and remove the blade. This is where a saw with a lifting top arm comes in handy. Just loosen the bottom blade clamp, and raise the arm.
