  1. Yes, the Reindeer took forever to sand and shape. There are a total of five different patterns for the reindeer including Rudolph. If you want all nine, you cut two of each and just one of Rudolph. I didn’t keep track of time as I worked on this set off and on for two weeks. Certainly not making any money on it, but will make a nice center piece at my booth.
  2. Nice work, I’m sure he will love it!
  3. I have a craft show this weekend, and will be priced at $250. It will certainly cover the materials cost but I won’t be making much on it. What it will do is draw people to my booth. If it doesn’t sell, my wife has already claimed it. She’s hoping it doesn’t sell!
  4. Nice work Paul!
  5. I have been on a crunch with my biggest show coming up next week. This is a set of patterns by Sheila Landry. The Sleigh is made from 1/4” Maple and 3/8” Sapele for the runners. The reindeer are made from 1/2” and 1/4” Cherry. For size reference, the board they are on is 4’ long. I’m pricing the set at $250!
  6. Great job Jimmy! That’s thinking outside the box! Now about that wood coming. Chances are that wood will arrive wrapped in plastic. Leave it in the plastic wrap for a few days in your shop to let the wood acclimate to the humidity in your shop. After a few days, you might what is called sticker and stack. That is stacking the wood with thin wood spacers in between the boards. This is to allow air to circulate evenly around the wood. This is all to prevent your boards from warping. If you don’t want to sticker and stack, lean the boards against a wall or solid surface, again to allow even airflow around the boards. Most importantly, do not lay them flat on your workbench or table. Only the top surface will get airflow and cause the boards to warp. Warping of new board is the biggest complaint we hear about when ordering wood online. Heres an example of a couple hundred dollars of wood ordered from Ochooch Hardwoods that I stacked and stickered.
  7. Looks pretty good Syd! You have done a good job. Just keep at it!
  8. Here’s a Turkey puzzle made from 1” Cherry. Cut with a FD #3 UR blade. Soaked in a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, then top coated with semi gloss lacquer.
  9. Here’s my display rack. It’s fairly portable. It’s put together with pocket holes so it can be disassembled if necessary. If you want dimensions, I’ll post them later when I get in my shop.
  10. I have a chair much like that one but I use a push on push off foot pedal. I’m constantly moving my feet position so I couldn’t use a deadman switch.
  11. Don’t do that! Make a shorter stand!
  12. Paul, instead of bolting the stand to the floor, build a shelf in the middle of the stand legs and place a bag of sand on it.. The sand will absorb whatever vibration you have.
  13. Nice cutting Marg!
  14. What’s the price?
  15. Clear packing tape does not come off easily. It’s actually tougher than blue tape to remove. It would take way to much time to remove than blue tape. For me, it’s easier to remove the pattern with the clear tape with a heat gun.
  16. I too use packing over the pattern. The trick is when applying it, make sure you apply it flat on the pattern without any air bubbles between the tape and pattern. Then I burnish it with a small block of wood to remove any remaining air bubbles. This prevents saw dust from getting under the tape and the tape lubricates the blade so there is less burning and a smoother cut. Other scrollers use blue painters tape under the pattern. There is a chemical in the tape that helps prevent the tape from sticking to itself when you unroll it. This additive is what lubricates the blade.
  17. https://www.stevedgood.com/scrollsawpuzzles.pdf At the end of the post he tells of ordering more sizes. I have done several jig saw puzzles all free hand, no pattern. My avatar of a King Charles Spaniel was my first puzzle done freehand.
  18. Steve Good has a couple on his site in his catalog.
  19. Nice work Paul!
  20. It’s good to hear from you JT, hope you visit often!
  21. FYI, young Ned hasn’t been on since February, 2022
  22. Table plaque made from 1/2” Cherry. Cut with Flying Dutchman UR #3 blades. Finished with my 50/50 blend of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits, then top coated with spray semi gloss Laquer. I don’t remember where the pattern came from.
  23. Glade it worked out for you Jim! I have cut 100 of them this year. Most going to a bird feed store for the holidays.
  24. When roughing out blanks, I use what ever blade is already in the saw from the previous cut. If there is no blade in the saw I would use what ever blade I use the least. It matter not what blade to use for roughing out.
  25. Never ever use silicone on any woodworking tools! As BadBob mentioned, silicone will interfere with some finishes. As was mentioned, use a paste wax that does not contain silicone. Most car wax’s contain silicone. Use a paste wax designed for woodworking. You can find paste wax in the paint section of most hardware stores or paint store.
