As a side business my wife cleans and restores DVDs, CDs and Game disks. We have a industrial machine that does it automatically. We have to post a warning that some disks have a very light coating glued to plastic. We haven't been able to determine which but 'metal coating' flakes off leaving clear plastic. Its going to be random. You may have repeated great results and at times the 'metal shine' will come right off. One disk had the layer laying in the machine and we were able to glue the entire sheet on. Rest of the time we have had disks that have patches missing. Our machine is a closed computer controlled system that buffs the scratches out. It takes just enough off to recover scratched disks. Even with computer control some disks have flaked. If you have a group of cheap disks to play with you can play with them, but if you want to use them continually your going to get the top coming off and leaving clear plastic. RJF

I own a cargo trailer and read trailer/ RV forums. A continuing subject is heating for cold weather. Trailers and RVs don't have the insulation like shops and houses. Smaller windows. It comes up on the subject of propane heaters all the time, that propane creates water moisture and some folks wake up and find water dripping off the ceiling and walls. Something to add into the thinking of using propane in the shop. With a window cracked the air enters for venting and probably water moisture goes out. Depending on insulation a shop could have a lot of moisture. RJF

The trick is to create 'registration marks'. Circles, X's Circle with a cross in it. Place these on sections of the the the edge areas that fit the printer paper. Then print sections of the design with the registration marks always over lapping from on area to another. After printing our the sections, over lap the paper and line up the registration marks. The same technique is used for multicolor overlays of t shirt screen printing, circuit board printing and other areas that the printing is larger then the machine or layers are added and everything needs to match. RJF There are software programs out there that will take a design and break it into printer paper sections to paste together. I have one that I think has a limitation of 100 ft x 100 ft. I haven't bought that much paper to try it. RJF

When I worked on a Honda motorcycle the screwheads always deformed so I used a manual impact screwdriver on them. Turned every time. Have had it around for screws that won't move since. You can find a lot of advise with a table saw crosses to a scroll saw on a smaller scale. Finish carpenters and cabinet makers will cut thin strips on table saws using high count thin blades, hold downs, clamps, jigs. The table saw is much more powerful, rotates one direction and has to be watched for kickback. Gluing temp backing for table saws is one tip of many. Of course many of the jigs won't have to be made, though I've been curious to scale these down as an experiment. RJF

I took photography and got a Nikon camera in high school. Use to develop film and took some photo courses in school and online. One 'trick' I learned and use is to make or buy playdough in a assortment of colors. I use it to prop, hold or even as a temp glue putty to hold a set of figures in a pose. Still have the camera a lens, just waiting for a come back. RJF

I use a similar larger one. The CLF bulbs that came with it were huge. Homemade boxes for photo shoots work fine, portability was on the top of my list. Another thing the cube does, is the material is light a studio light, making the lighting less harsh. Studio lights use this along with different reflectors for proper illumination. The ebay, sales sites don't necessarily need professional shots, but a little upgrade of equipment with the right back drops can be a difference between a ceiling light and a blanket on the floor and a sharp up close crisp image. A couple of additions to my new saw
teachnlearn replied to Badgerboy's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Sound exponentially decreases with distance. There are a lot of specs that state the sound measurement, but not the distance. So one person measures it 1 inch from the vacuum, another measures it from where they sit with the scroll saw and its 20 feet away. There are sites and companies that deal completely with sound deadening materials.. A decent enclosure and sound damping materials is going have great improvement on a quiet or loud vac. Living in apartments, and killing sound was too much of my life. RJF One of many sites. https://www.yahoosoundproofing.com/ -

Jim since you have done electronics, buy a vac with a motor like grizzly or whatever and change the motor to an industrial motor. RJF -
My son and wife collect things and we sold a bit on eBay. Didn't have to room so I bought a photo cube. Got a kit with the cube, lights and bag. Living in apartments and Navy 'house' we never had room so I stayed portable. Its in storage and will see light soon and probably more use when we sort our stuff. Cubes/ tents are popup and spring open. fold to a small circle. Pulled a link with a selection. I got one that even had a group of photo color backdrops. Its been so long, I don't know if its made our still posted. I think there is a difference between company's doing kind acts and liability. Just existing as a company there has to be insurance. With Disney parks they have had massive suits. Companies do many programs to give back to communities, even individuals. If you consider every action as possibly being sued your going to stop doing anything. 'Backing out of your driveway is a liability, I think you should keep the car in the garage.' 'Helping a neighbor, they may sue, don't do it.'. Businesses and individuals have insurance and there are lawyers to handle liability. Anyone cut themselves on a scroll blade? You can either put a band aide on your finger or sue the manufacturer. If people are going to sue, they are going to sue. A part of a brand new bike broke and wrapped into the wheel of my sons bike. He went right over the handle bars. We were in the Navy so the Navy hospital xrayed and patched the scrapes. Called the mgr and let them know they had material problems with their bikes. They investigated, sent a new bike and no suit was ever discussed. Was more concerned other kids would be hurt. My comment on Disney is more of companies going to extremes. Surfing the net for any artist that hand paints a character, or paints a favorite character in a child's room..There is no way an artist can paint thousands of copies to cut into a business profit. I miss the logic on giving a toy to a child. If they choke on the toy given has a different liability then a toy bought? I think every parent has read the label, ' MAY CONTAIN SMALL PARTS, KEEP AWAY FROM YOUNG CHILDREN'. RJF

Grizzly gave a disabled vet a entire shop of equipment. I doubt they will give every disabled vet a fully shop. They used their discretion to assist. I doubt travel, food and lodging for a team would even be noticed by a billion dollar corporation. Walt Disney use to take entire teams of artists to other countries for months to study animal movements and details. There are many examples of people on this board, lowering costs or giving a toy to a child. Acts of kindness don't always have to be about the money. I've helped many disabled, design and built adaptions on my own expense, recognizing the person and their family couldn't afford it. I sure couldn't design and build everything for free myself, and "I don't have billions of dollars.". RJF

Foot switch mod for high chair operation
teachnlearn replied to davidg's topic in General Scroll Sawing
As people age there becomes more of a need of adjustments, since sitting in one position becomes painful. There are many chairs with multiple levers just to adjust the positions. I use to squat and work for hours. No more. RJF -
Years ago there was an article of a day care that painted Disney characters on the walls for the kids. Disney found out and immediately made them paint their walls. I think Disney made a mistake. They should have sent some artist to punch up the artwork, add some characters, and show the community its about the kids rather then the money. Wonder if Walt Disney would have done it differently? Foot switch mod for high chair operation
teachnlearn replied to davidg's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Think of a gift box that has a lid that fits over the bottom box. It could be two box shapes that fit like the gift box, or I was thinking of a open frame that adjusts. The top 'cover' is made so it fit completely to the bottom box. Then holes are drilled like shelve holes 'One on two sides of the bottom box for the bolt' Then a group of vertical holes on the 'lid side' for the lid to adjust. A wing nut or nice knob secures the two bolts. The bottom box would have to have just sides so you can insert the bolts from the inside. RJF -

Could be a 'scroll saw project'. I don't have access to my drawing package, but I was thinking of building two U's out of 3/4" plywood. Have one U fit outside the other. Now either drill a group of holes like the side of shelving in the lags of one U and one or two aligned holed in the inside U. The pieces could adjust up and down by aligning the holes and putting a bolt in each side. Or up scale it and create an open slot in each leg of the outer U. legs. With a bolt though the inner U legs and outer slots, it would be continuously adjustable. RJF
