rjweb Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Where are you buying your spray adhesive, i usually buy from hd but they don’t seem to carry any more, thx RJ OCtoolguy 1 Quote
jerry walters Posted June 10 Posted June 10 For the past several years I have purchased 3M 77 spray at ACE hardware. A few months ago, when I needed some, went to the same store. The only had Gorilla Spray adhesive. I thought OK, this is a good brand. Clerks in the store didn't know much about the brand. Didn't work well for me. Maybe I was using it wrong. Anyway, I found that sometimes my pattern would pull away from the shelf paper I would put on the wood. I have used Gorilla wood glue with no issues. Recently when in the store I noticed they had 3M 77 spray back on the shelf, but the can did not look the same. The instructions on how to use it also changed, but I thought what the heck. I will try it. Following the instructions to a "T", it worked. I will see what happens the next time I use it. Jerry barb.j.enders, tomsteve and OCtoolguy 2 1 Quote

kmmcrafts Posted June 10 Posted June 10 (edited) I read somewhere they maybe rebranded it with a different brand name? It's still has the 77 on the can but sold under a different name? Gosh I don't remember now what it was about or where I seen this info but anyway.. it may look like a different product than it used to look. Do not know if there is any truth to any of this.. just remember reading something about it. Edit: I googled about it and it is still available according to google but the 3M 45 is the one they discontinued.. but it also states that 3M 77 cannot be sold or shipped to certain states because of EPA regulations.. dgman Posted June 10 Posted June 10 I purchased a can of 3M 77 at Home Depot in So. Ca. Just last week. The previous can of spray adhesive I had was Scotch brand 77. It did not work as well as 3M brand. I found myself having to tape sections of the pattern that lifted as I cut. OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders 1 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted June 11 Posted June 11 Didn't pick it up to examine, but saw cans of 77 today in Staples. Looked like new packaging. OCtoolguy and barb.j.enders 2 Quote

Jerry I had tried Gorilla spray once. It was less expensive than the 3M spray. I had the same issues as you. Pattern would pull away. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

redwine Posted June 11 Posted June 11 I had been buying the 3m 77 spray at Walmart and when I needed it again it had been repackaged into a very tall can that is available at Home Depot and Lowes! It does spray a different consistency but holds ever bit as good as always! The thing I don't like is the can is so tall that I have to use one of the spray handles used for rattle can spray paints, to control where the spray is going, other than that it is still the go to adheseve! Gonzo Posted June 11 Posted June 11 Earlier in the year I bought a can of 77 with the new labeling. I haven’t notice any difference. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted June 12 Posted June 12 (edited) Just for sake of info, a few years ago my wife bought a small can of Elmer's spray adhesive. She never used it so I grabbed for my shop. It works great and I love the small can. Much easier for my mallet hands. I have short fat fingers. Since then I have repurchased and used a few cans and have not gone back to the 3M77. Such a big fat can is just hard for me to use. Edited June 14 by OCtoolguy TAIrving 1 Quote
nrscroller Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I used the 45 craft spray from 3m a few years ago. You want a better idea with no cummy wood to sand....try this..... Buy clear shelf contact paper at walmart in rolls, sand your wood, cut piece to fit on wood urface. Take your pattern and copy it onto full size packing labels, then stick that on top of the contact paper and when your done cutting just peel it all off and wood is clean. I have been doing this for years and it works well. If you have small patterns, just put more than one on the shipping label and cut that down to size after printing pattern out. edward Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I been using it for years, haven't tried anything else I get mine at HD or Lowes. Quote
Denny Knappen Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I print patterns on one piece label paper. Amazon lists it in various quantities. I bought the largest quantity at 6 cents per sheet. TAIrving 1 Quote
Mike Crosa Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I also get the labels from Amazon but have not see them as cheap as Denny got them for. Denny whats the name? Quote
JimNC Posted June 12 Posted June 12 I use 77 on the pattern paper but before applying on the masking tape and found it pull away so I take some 400 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the tape. I think the better masking has a coating to prevent leaking through. I wipe away any grit left behind from the sanding. I don't have the pull away on the cheap tape. Quote

Thinking he does like I used to and buy in quantity/ for bulk or wholesale pricing. I buy mine from eBay as it was cheaper than Amazon at that time anyway. I buy around 1000 - 2000 sheets at a time and it last me a couple years. Quote
Scrappile Posted June 13 Posted June 13 Alway hit and miss for me. I check Home Depot, Lowes and ACE Hardware. I will add walmart to the list of "to check" Quote

Right, most people really probably only would want maybe 50 - 100.. it gets kind of pricey in those smaller quantities unfortunately. When I first started using them for patterns was because my spray can either clogged up or ran out of air and nothing was open in the middle of the night. I had a order that needed to get made so I gave the shipping label a try since I already had them for shipping orders.. Never used regular paper again other than large projects that needed pieced together with several papers. Really speeds up the process and not dealing with clogged spray nozzles etc. was well worth it to me. I now use a thermal printer for shipping labels so those full sheet labels are only for patterns. It's real nice not having to deal with the spray glue getting all over everything around where you spray it and then also no sticky fingers from the spray glue, LOL.. Nice just to print the pattern and then peel and stick it.. I tried to talk more into using it and maybe doing a group by and splitting it up but nobody seemed interested at the time.. barb.j.enders 1 Quote
