  1. Whatever it is, it is very heavy and hard as rock. I just spoke with Woodcraft and thankfully I can exchange it.
  2. @Bill WIlson @ChelCass @TAIrving @barb.j.enders Thanks for the responses. And it may well be that it isn't Limba because I had also seen that it isn't supposed to be that toxic or hard to work with. I lost count of how many drill bits I broke off. I hate when that happens. I nearly always end up hitting the bit and ruining a blade when I try to cut around it. It could be a coincidence that I got sick on that day. I'm still going to call today and see if they'll let me exchange it.
  3. Just curious if anyone else has worked with White Limba wood. I went to Woodcraft in Birmingham Alabama and they have a large bin of cut-offs that are $2 a pound. It had a lot of quarter sawn White Limba, which I'd never heard of. It looked great for portraits and I bought just over 60 pounds thinking I wouldn't have to buy any wood for a year. It's so hard I broke about 6 drill bits and a dozen blades on my first small project, plus I've been really sick with sinus and chest congestion for 5 days since I worked with it though I did wear a mask and run my dust collection. Planning to call today to see if they'll let me exchange the 60ish pounds I have left.
  4. Thank you, Paul! Glad I just used a satin enamel finish.
  5. Thanks, Barb. Usually we look for the right piece of wood for a pattern. This time it was the other way around. Since it was for my wife I showed her the wood and let her find a pattern. She did good.
  6. Made this for my flower loving wife for Spring for our front porch. It's about 12" X 20". I'm not sure of the wood type. It looks like oak but it's light as balsa wood and is quite strong. The pattern is from a stencil I bought on Etsy.
  7. That is beautiful! Great idea for mounting it.
  8. Wow! You just can’t help but stop and stare at that for a while. Amazing work!
  9. Beautiful, Dave! While I’d like to try it…
  10. Excellent job and that wood works well with it! Thanks for sharing.
  11. Fantastic work! He's definitely one of a kind.
  12. Very cool!
  13. Great job on everything!
  14. Thanks. I definitely benefited from the fact that only small areas show through the cuts. It's a mess behind the wood.
  15. Sorry , it’s not my pattern. It was a stencil on Etsy and the lady gave me permission to use it.
  16. Here's my effort.
  17. Nice looking piece. For a piece like that I actually like the look of a non-mitered frame. Bit more rustic, which I like. I've got around 140 portraits on my shop walls and not a frame on one of them, so you know how much I enjoy making frames.
  18. Great job, Dick!
  19. Thanks, Dave. I just used some acrylic craft paint. I used the pattern after I removed it as a stencil to help with where to paint on the backer. The wood is 1/2" so the colors don't all show up as much as on thin plywood, but I actually like the way it works, as you move from one side to the other different parts stand out.
  20. This is my favorite version. Kris and Johnny together with The Highwaymen.
  21. Made this for a door prize for our local Meals on Wheels. Now my wife and daughter want one. 3 x $0 =$0
  22. Thank you! I've been a Willie fan since I was a young teenager. He's made several appearances on my wall. Kris was the last of the Highwaymen that I've cut individually. I'm going to try and rearrange them to get them all together.
  23. Thank you! This song would have to be in my top ten. I almost didn’t add the words but I’m really glad I did. I like that the text is “coming down.”
  24. Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt. And I shaved my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. Kris has written some awesome lyrics. I'll add the pattern to the library.
