    Thanks Ron. I used 1/2" oak. This one turned out a bit darker than I wanted but, for me anyway, this pattern looks better on a piece of wood with a little going on than a plain piece of Birch. Just my opinion. Almost everyone who has seen one I've cut in person relates to it. Nothing to do with my cutting, just a really touching picture. Makes me think of looking at my dad's huge hands during church when I was a small child. Also for me from a spiritual perspective, it's a guiding hand. Plus my grandkids used to hold my pinky.

    Shows up a bit better in person. I've cut and given this one many times. I honestly believe a person could stay busy cutting this one pattern to sell. Everyone seems to relate to it in some way. I cut one to give away in a drawing at our local meals on wheels and the lady in charge asked if she could please have it, as her 3 month old grandchild is having serious health issues. So I cut this one this afternoon to take its place. What a cool hobby we have! Use it to bless someone, and it'll be you.

    Thank you. He was a good man. I spoke at his funeral and mostly talked to his grandkids and great grandkids reminding them how cool he was. I actually said bad-a**. He was in the Navy on a submarine. Got stranded at sea for a couple of days in the winter with a buddy when the used boat they had just bought together broke down. He was a mechanic who could fix anything. He was a great dirt track race car driver. Decided he wanted a lake on his land so he bought an old bull dozer and built one. Like I said, I'll probably remake the frame since I'm sure the plaque will be around for generations.

    My father-in-law passed away a few weeks ago and I found an old brass plaque in his shed. He was a sailor on the USS James Monroe, a submarine, in the early 60's. It was very tarnished and on a not so pretty wooden board. Certainly not bragging on my frame here. I cut it like an inlay so the inner circle where the brass plaque goes would be slightly inset. When I was pushing it in place the outer circle broke at 3 o'clock. I'll probably remake it but wanted to show his plaque off anyway. I certainly don't have what it takes to be a submariner.

    Beautiful!!! I can "play" chess but there's not really any strategy involved. Checkers is more my speed, but it may actually be a sin to play checkers on a table that nice.

    Thanks Marg. The grain messed this one up a bit. I put a light stain on it which I don’t normally do and it really brought out the grain too much. Oh well, he’ll do for my wall. I’ve seen every episode multiple times also. Even have a Monk coffee mug. Considering the subject, I’ll have to make sure I hang this one level.

    I get this oak dirt cheap at a local consignment shop, like $5 for a 1 X 8 X 8' but it's wormy and not kiln dried so sometimes it warps when I start cutting it. Still get some great pieces sometimes. I cut a small piece and put in in our oven warming drawer for a couple of hours at 160 degrees to kill any living critters in it and dry it out a bit.

    Thanks so much Bill. I love Festus! I've never seen him in any movies but I have seen videos of him singing and after hearing his Festus voice all those years it's amazing. I cut this pattern by @wild bill a few years ago. I thought he did a great job capturing him. I just added some wrinkles to his forehead.

    Thanks @Fish for letting me "borrow" your idea. I used a piece of wormy red oak. A scroll saw can double as a time machine. This one took me back about 40 years. A good year for me.

    It's called Cute Cutter. It takes a huge amount of playing around with it to get good results. At least half the time I give up and delete.

    Oh wow! I love that! Is the pattern you made anything you could share? I'd love to steal your idea! I think I'd like to do my wife and my initials but use her maiden name initials and our marriage year below it.

    Patrick Maxwell Renna as Hamilton "Ham" Porter from the movie, "The Sandlot." I was more of a Smalls, "made straight A's and sh*t" but thought too much to be good at sports. So great when the "Benny the Jets" encourage the "Smalls" of the world. I had one or two in my life. Sorry if you don't recognize the references. Love this movie!
