I think it would be a bit difficult for a brand new scroller because the ribbon is a pretty thick cut so you need to be careful not to let your blade and wood drift. It wouldn't hurt to try though... @artisanpirate who is a member on the village shows his Jig which is similar to mine in this video: Hope this helps. mc

Nice Charlie, What kind of finish did you put on it? That really is a pretty Ambrosia Maple. We sell that wood at Woodcraft but it doesn't look quite that dark. Very nice.

Thank you so much! You really should make one once you are back on your feet. It was super fun seeing it develop and you are so talented that it wouldn't be difficult at all for you. I did use flocking on the inside. I work for Woodcraft and we sell alot of colors in our store. But sometimes it is hit or miss. I was lucky to get purple. I bought a used book for the pattern and instructions. She is really pretty good at describing the steps. Peter, Thank you! I gave it to her today and she really couldn't believe it. It was well worth seeing the smile on her face when I gave it to her. She was more excited about the box than she was about the expensive necklace and earrings I put in the box.

Mark, thanks so much! It really wasn't very difficult. I made a jig to hold my piece together during the compound cuts. That also helped me to not cut myself. I think the hardest part was cutting the pieces of wood really thin using my band saw before gluing them together. I have a Laguna 18" 5 HP monster bandsaw so resawing those little itty bitty pieces on that seemed a bit scary. I ended up gluing bigger pieces of scrap wood to them to hold them while I cut them into thin strips. Hot glue works great for that as I can heat it up with a heat gun and they come apart easily with out breaking the thin pieces if that makes sense. The blade I used was a #9 I think Pegas Reverse tooth?....I used my Hawk G4 26 which allows me to tighten the blade crazy tight to reduce drift, plus I practiced all my "stop drift" techniques I learned from all of the folks on here . Cutting the ribbon didn't take too long really. I did go through probably 8 blades though because of that darn purple heart. I am not really sure how long the entire ribbon took me though because I had a bunch of interruptions. Thanks again. mc

I have seen this done on here before so I decided to give it a try. I am celebrating my daughter's birthday tomorrow and I needed a box to put her jewelry in. It really was a fun project to do. It is a Carole Rothman pattern. I used walnut for the box and Holly, Purple heart, Canary wood and Bloodwood for the ribbon.

I have cut with red heart which is a really pretty red wood and have had no issues...You might want to try that. Often times Red heart goes on sale in February (for the Valentine's day month) at Woodcraft so you might want to see if that is the case this year. Here is a discription of it: The bright red background of Redheart (Erythroxylon mexicanum) is host to a number of very interesting streaks and closed knots. It is smooth and tight grained, and sands to a nice workable surface. Redheart does not tear out when planed, and is nice for scroll sawing. In many ways it is similar to Bloodwood in character and color without the possibility of allergic reaction from the dust. (It comes from Mexico most of the time)

I am in line with Kevin @kmmcrafts but I do love the color of all the Walnut woods (native and exotics) and I enjoy cutting it. I really do not like cutting purple heart though.

My favorite from this past year was my daughter's music box that I gave her for graduation. The mechanical musical movement I used came out of an old tin box that she had as a child so I designed a piano jewelry box since she loved playing the piano as a child and now as an adult. 20240605_140234.mp4

Paul, that is amazing! What type of wood did you use to cut this (and thickness). If it was me, I wouldn't add any color except maybe shellac or the normal amber from some of the oil finishes. Nice work!
