  1. I suspect there is a clog somewhere in your sander. I used to have a Porter Cable 33 that worked great with the vac system, however that unit died after 15 years of great service. I currently have a Makita B5042 which has a pistol grip and variable speed. It works just a good as the old Porter Cable with the shop vac and Dust Deputy. All my other sanders are either hooked up to my dust collector or I hook them up to the shop vac and DD.
  2. I do not use a downdraft table because I keep my ROS connected to a dedicated vac with a DustDeputy. It collects ALL the dust when sanding. With the Dust Deputy hooked up, I only have to clean the vac filter once a year, weather it needs it or not! And there is no airborne dust!
  3. Why settle for MDF? I would never use MDF. I always use hardwoods. Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Mahogany, oak and Sapele. Alder, Yellowheart, Purpleheart, and Redheart. Wow! So many beautiful hardwoods and you want to use MDF! Go to Ochooch hardwoods. They have the thickness and widths you need. Probably priced competitively to MDF. Hardwoods have grain and texture. MDF has no grain. MDF stand for medium density fiberboard. That’s not wood. It’s a wood byproduct full of nasty chemicals.
  4. That is a great cutting of a great car! Very nicely done!
  5. You’re right Ray, I remember now. Mahogany was a great alternative. In fact, Sapele is often used as a Mahogany alternative as genuine Mahogany is getting hard to find. Sapele is a little harder and darker than genuine Mahogany, but cuts very nicely. I use a lot of it!
  6. Woodcraft usually carries it. I also can find it at my local hardwood dealer. Also, Woodworkers Source has it. It is an online dealer. It is a great wood to work with!
  7. By the way, what you call Sqigglies is called tear out.
  8. Yes, that is what I use when setting small screws. I measure the length of the screw and apply some blue tape to the gimlet as a depth stop.
  9. Your problem is one or both of two things. Your drill bit is dull or the speed of the drill is incorrect. I always use a drill press to drill my holes. Drill bits are designed to operate at an optimum speed. You can find a speed chart at woodmagazine.com
  10. I do think 1/2” is to thick for a jewelry box. I would use 1/4”, although some like Jim Finn uses 3/8”. As far as the hinges, you do need a pilot hole for the screws. I use gimlets. They are manual screw starters. They come in sets to accommodate different sizes of screws. Basically, they are threaded at the tip with a loop at the top to turn it into the wood to make your screw hole. Since you are using 1/2” for the body, the screws will not penetrate through the wood. However, the screw may be to long for the 1/4” top. I mount the hing to a scrap of the top material and see how much it protrudes. Then grind the tip on a grinder to the length needed. Then gently screw in the screw, backing it out to clear the dust until it is seated properly. You may want to use a steal screw first as the small brass screw break easily. You can get gimlets at garrettwade.com. Look for screw gimlets.

  16. I’ve only had two table saws. My first saw was a POS Craftmans saw. Enough said. I currently own an American made, right tilt Delta unisaw with a unifence. Bought it from a place called Woodworkers Wearhouse in Phoenix Arizona. At the time, they where the Delta outlet for for discontinued models.it has a 30” fence and a Mobile base. Payed $1195 with free shipping to my shop. It was the best purchase I’ve ever made. I’ve had it for about 18-20 years and have never had a problem with it. If I where in the market today, I would look at the SawStop contractor saw or maybe the Laguna saws.as always, see what’s going on on Craigs list.
  17. Nice tribute Gary and great cutting! Way back in another life time when I was playing, the band I was in kind of followed them in venues that they played in. I never meet the band, but I feel like we where compadres.

  20. Steve is indeed a great guy. I was one of the first persons to join his community forum many years ago. I asked my wife who is a nurse about this disease. And though it is incurable , it is very treatable. If properly treated, he should be fine.
