  1. Hello Clive, Good for you for being a part of the Santa Clause woodshop. It is a great feeling to make things that will bring some joy to others, especially kids. I hope that you venture into some new scrolling projects because , at least for me, variety brings added joy. I like trying new things and discovering that I am not limited to only what I "thought" I might be something I was not sure I would be able to do. discover new things and try a lot of things. Take time and explore all the things we offer each other here on The Village from free advice on anything to free patterns to try and free tutorials on pattern making..Log on often and you soon will have a lot of new friends, share you projects with us too Dick heppnerguy
  2. Free is a very good price, Kevin. hummm I wonder if I had a friend, if I would get free wood ? Dick heppnerguy
  3. I also have a DeWalt and I have always enjoyed it. It is a fun and easy saw to use. Have a great time with yours. Make a lot of sawdust Dick heppnerguy
  4. Al, you got to love Sue Meys patterns she does such a nice detailed job designing them. You did a superb job cutting them. Very nice Dick heppnerguy

  6. I searched a lot for the aromatic cedar, called Tennessee Cedar. The cost was $ 5.15 a board foot in Portland. I recently found some available at a small lumber yard about an hour from my house and paid $3.10. I was so happy to find it, after looking for some time. It is so pretty and I can get so much more for the money without having the high shipping cost that easily double the cost of getting wood shipped from other places I have found on the net. I feel lucky to even find some availability. Dick heppnerguy
  7. Thomas, Glad to meet you. I can;t add much to what others have already said to you except one of the most important things you ca do is to log on here often, post and share with us your work. The best way to understand who we all are and feel 'right at home here'. Dick heppnerguy
  8. I also would like to Welcome you to The Village. It seems like most to the active family members here are from across the pond. I am so happy to know this sight has reached so many people from outside America. I think it is good for everyone to make contact with people from many countries because we all find out that everyone is friendly, helpful and we all share a lot of things, even though our cultures may differ a lot sometimes. Do feel free to explore this sight and be sure to log on here often so that you can get to know us better and we have the opportunity to do the same with you. We all love it when a new comer discovers us on the internet. We hope to be getting a chance to see some of your work here. Post, read, participate and very soon you will realize that you have become a part of our family. Dick heppnerguy
  9. again, I wish to thank everyone for taking the time to help my with my finishing problem. I never was very good at finish work. Now I should be doing a lot better because I am better educated now. The next time I try to finish something with a gloss I will let you know my outcome I can not thank you all, enough, for your help. I love this family we have here. Dick heppnerguy
  10. A very nice portrait. She will be pleased indeed. Glad you are able to fire up the ol saw again. Dick heppnerguy
  11. Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, I will indeed try the saw first. Being it is a used saw, I am not sure if there are any parts replacement problems, just in case. I will keep looking to see if I get any other people that might chime in on this Dick heppnerguy
  12. I love this. Is it your pattern ? very nice Dick heppnerguy
  13. you did not only a superb job cutting the picture and you made a perfect choice on your frame too. Keep up the good work and be sure and post them for us all. Dick heppnerguy
  14. John, a very nice job. You will be getting a lot of nice comments from your guests at home and I bet that you will get some orders to make more of them too. Dick heppnerguy
  15. Frank, nice to see the mixture of talents here. so many that it keeps my head twirling and it makes me want to try a lot of other things along the way, but first I need to learn a lot more about scrolling, finishing and intarsia.. I am a slow learner but i enjoy what I do. Thanks for posting the your nice work for us to enjoy. Keep up the good work Dick heppnerguy
  16. I have a wood burning tool and I use it for making eyes, toes, noses and small things like that in intarsia work. I enjoy seeing the work of people that use this medium. I thought at one time that I would like to do that along with carving but then the scroll bug bit me. Dick heppnerguy
  17. My hat is off to both you and Don. I think you made Don proud of his work and yours. Dick heppnerguy
  18. Roly, I looked at it on line and it is not a cheap one. Thank you for your comment. I respect your knowledge and wisdom. I hope someone can help me with this because it appears to be a really good deal. Dick heppnerguy
  19. I have a DeWalt too and the more I use it the more i like it. I live in a remote area and I have been considering buying a back up saw. I do have a Ryobe that I can use but i really would like a better quality saw. I am now looking at an RBI saw but know nothing about it. A good saw is a big help at enjoying scrolling if your saw is dependable and easy to use. I hope your son enjoys his saw as much as i do mine. Dick heppnerguy
  20. I have an oportunity to buy a used RBI scroll saw for $225. I know it comes with the stand, variable speed motor, lighted magnifying lighted glass, and foot control. I was told that it is a few years old but used very little. I have seen a photo of it but not the saw itself. I know nothing about these saws but I do know they are not cheap saws. I need any information any of you might be able to give me, please, Dick heppnerguy
  21. thanks all, I made another cross, which someone ordered the day I posted the one I showed you; I am not planning on trying to sell the one i posted because of the finish problem. But the photo I posted on my page was taken in a different light and the poor finis does not show. i will pay attention to all your helpful hints and let you know what happens the next time I take a crack at a glossy finish. Dick heppenrguy
  22. I started to save them with the pattern makers name as part of the save...I don't know what I will do with all the many I have DL already but from now on, that is what I am going to do Dick heppnerguy
  23. Thanks everyone .. my comments on your advice is;1; I do try to us very light coats, but probably could try harder... 2. The temperature was probably too cold at the time, 3. the sawdust was the results of sanding off my first efforts and not realizing I had not gotten all the new sawdust off before I re-sprayed. ( in a hurry ) 4. There could be a nozzle problem also, but there should not have been because it was a new can, but it was too cold too, I believe Thanks again to everyone who helped my with this, I am not going to take all the time to again try to reapply a new surface to it. It will be quicker just to make another one, I believe. Besides I like making them way more than I do finishing them. Dick heppnerguy
  24. I did re-sand it from the first time and then coated it with the polyurethane. had the same results. I will give it another go, Thanks for your info guys...I thought I had all basis covered.. I will let you know what happens Dick heppnerguy
  25. I cut this cross a couple of days ago and the I am having a finish problem that I have never had before. As you can see from the photo, i am getting a rough finish. I have tried to finish with a spray lacquer made by DEFT and I had this results so I sanded it off and now I used a miniwax polyurethane and got the exact problem. I am not worth a hoot at finishing but my wife likes the glossy finish best. So does anyone have an idea why I am having this finish problem and what I might do differently ? Open for any advice anyone may have to offer me. Dick heppnerguy
